Erosion: A Song for Cliffs is a site-specific sound art piece that was installed on the cliffs of Cabrillo National Monument. We were inspired by the waves eroding and pummeling the shoreline. We tried to recreate this effect using sound instead of a physical medium.
The piece plays a soundtrack of surf rock music from the 1960s. The music is eroded and distorted by various audio transforms. As viewers approach the piece, the audio becomes more and more legible. In order to hear the music, the viewer must approach the cliffs, giving them a moment to reconnect with nature. In practice, our piece became a type of theremin. Viewers loved dancing and moving to manipulate the reverb and other effects!
